RF Awards A-Class Teachers

RF recently awarded ten of Barbados’ top teachers to culminate the 2018 RF National Distinguished Teachers’ Awards programme hosted in association with the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training. The RF National Distinguished Teachers’ Awards, established in 2010, constitute the institution’s flagship corporate citizenship initiative which seeks to make a positive impact on Barbados’ social landscape, by way of recognizing the immense contribution teachers make towards the country’s development.

According to Jillian Nunes, RF’s Vice President and Barbados Country Head “the inception of the RF National Distinguished Teachers’ Awards was based on the realization that despite teachers going above and beyond to motivate students, their efforts regularly go unnoticed or receive very little acknowledgement. Teachers are arguably our greatest public servants; dedicating their lives to the education of our young people and thereby shaping our nation for the future. We therefore introduced these awards to give teachers the recognition which they truly deserve.”

All members of the community including school administrators, parents and students were invited to nominate teachers with no less than five years teaching experience. The ‘Blue Ribbon Judging Panel’, comprising retired Principal of The St. Michael School and Chief Judge Shelton Perkins, Dr. Sylvia L. Hackett, retired Deputy Principal of the Barbados Community College and Beverley Parris, former Principal of Lawrence T. Gay Primary School chose ten (10) outstanding teachers who exemplify excellence in education.

Awardees, who were selected from both public and private schools, received BDS $2,000 each and the title, “RF National Distinguished Teacher, 2018” as follows:

Ms. Nunes continued, “We strongly believe that great teachers inspire greatness in our children and we are honoured to induct another group of exceptional teachers into the RF National Distinguished Teachers’ Hall of Fame. We also congratulate the Roland Edwards Primary School for submission of the most nominations and thank Principal George Francis for collecting a $500 prize on behalf of the school.”

Robert de Silva, Managing Director of RBC Royal Bank Barbados commented on the company’s gold sponsorship of the 2018 RF National Distinguished Teachers’ Awards. “Education in its broadest meaning is preparation. We believe teachers play an immense role in shaping the minds of our youth and enabling them to pursue opportunities and take on the challenges of the future. Supporting the annual RF National Distinguished Teachers’ Awards is RBC’s way of recognizing teachers and the positive difference they make for our youth and the future of Barbados.”

In addition to expressing her gratitude with respect to RBC Royal Bank’s gold sponsorship, Ms. Nunes stated that the awards presentation held on April 26th 2019 “would not have been possible without the support of event sponsors Chickmont Foods Limited and Sea Breeze Beach House, provision of lighting services sponsored by Intelligent Lighting Barbados and printing services from COT Holdings.”

Speaking on his company’s sponsorship of the awards presentation, Managing Director of Montrose Holdings group of companies, Dominic DeFreitas noted, “once we became aware of the remarkable work done by the teachers receiving the RF National Distinguished Teachers’ Awards, we were more than happy to throw our support towards hosting an event befitting of these awardees.”

Sharing similar sentiments, Errol Clarke, Managing Director of Intelligent Lighting Barbados stated, “based on our valued relationship with RF, we did not hesitate when given the opportunity to offer our services in support of an event which celebrates ten of our island’s finest educators.”

The RF National Distinguished Teachers’ Awards for 2019 are scheduled to be launched during the third quarter of this year.
